Plant List for our Small SWFL Permaculture Garden and Native Habitat

This list is a work in progress. It will be updated regularly as we add more plants. If we find a plant isn’t growing well in our area it will be removed from the list. I will include links to posts when I have written about a particular plant.  I have given the scientific name so that you can easily research each plant. I have not included traditionally grown annual vegetables as they are not always replanted. Some self seeding varieties may be listed.

We live in zone 10a, on the cusp of 9b, so we get an occasional frost.  Only rarely do we ever reach temperatures below freezing. This allows us to grow many subtropical plants. We also have periods of extremely dry weather followed by summers of high humidity and torrential rainfall. In an effort to encourage native pollinators and to provide habitat for wildlife, we also include many native plant species.  The plants we choose are grown for many uses such as for food, fiber, medicinal value, fragrance or as a mulch or cover crop. Many of the fruit trees are newly planted and so they have not yet formed a canopy layer.
